The Cricket On The Hearth or “The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home” to give it its full title was the third of 5 fames Christmas books written by Charles Dickens. This novella was written and published in 1845. As with the previous Christmas books he decided against standard “chapters” and instead went with “Chirps.”
In this tale which Dickens himself called “innocent and pretty” we follow the tangled love story of John Perry Bingle and his family watched over by the guardian Cricket on the hearth of the title.
